What About Me

All disobedience stems from selfishness. Selfishness is a destructive force that leads to negative outcomes. It focuses on one’s own interests contrary to God’s character and focuses on worldly gain rather than spiritual riches. It can be a response to stress or fear of scarcity. It is an innate drive for survival. We see selfishness in greed, controlling situations or people, a lack of empathy, and when someone constantly redirects the situation back to themselves. The highest form of selfishness is the one who wants to go to heaven by themselves.

Humility is the antidote for selfishness. Don’t be self-seeking, greedy, and arrogant. All that we are comes from God to begin with, so He alone deserves all honor and praise. Point recognition back to God. Trust that God will supply all your needs. “Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.” - C.S. Lewis

PRAYER BY SIR FRANCES DRAKE:

Disturb us, Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves,

When our dreams have come true because we have dreamed too little,

When we arrived safely because we sailed too closely to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess we have lost our thirst for the waters of life;

Having fallen in love with life,

We have ceased to dream of eternity

And in our efforts to build a new earth,

We have allowed our vision of the new heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare move boldly

To venture in wider seas where storms will show your mastery;

Where losing sight of land

We shall find the stars;

We ask you to push back the horizons of our hope;

And to push into the future in strength, courage, hope, and love. Amen
